Project at Stadtteilschule Rissen
In May, the Geschichtomat project visited the Stadtteilschule Rissen for the second time. A 12th-grade class set out to uncover the past and explore the Jewish history of Wedel and Blankenese. The result was five fascinating videos:
- In the heart of Blankenese, the Roman Garden invites visitors to stroll and linger. It was originally laid out by the Warburg family. In their video, the students explain the history of this place and the significance of the Warburg family for Blankenese.
- A second group of students set out to uncover traces of the past and researched the life of the merchant Julius Asch. Today, a Stolperstein in Blankenese commemorates him. The group was supported by Prof. Friedemann Hellwig from the Forum for Jewish Life in Blankenese e.V.
- Since September 2013, a memorial has commemorated the Jewish residents of the house at Steubenweg (now Grotiusweg) 36, which was used by the Nazis as a so-called Judenhaus. Another group researched the history of the memorial. To do so, they conducted an interview with Prof. Friedemann Hellwig from the Forum for Jewish Life in Blankenese e.V.
- A project space dedicated to Jewish history has opened at the Altonaer Museum. In their video, the students explain what this exhibition is all about and what’s coming next. Anne Kunhardt from the Altonaer Museum was able to answer their questions.
- They also visited Wedel, as there was once a Jewish community there as well. For their research, the students visited the city archives to see what sources still exist today regarding the former Jewish life in Wedel.
We thank all interview partners for their support and hope you enjoy watching the videos!
