Projectweek at Margaretha-Rothe-Gymnasium in Barmbek
In October, we were guests at Margaretha-Rothe-Gymnasium in Barmbek for the second time. Students from Year 7 to Year 9 took part and produced four videos:
- This time, all four groups focused on the historical site of the Stadthaus in Hamburg's city centre. In their films, they each shed light on different aspects of this place, which was the headquarters of the Hamburg Gestapo during the Nazi era, among other things. Since 2022, the historical site has been part of Hamburg's memorials and places of learning in memory of the victims of Nazi crimes. The school's namesake, Margaretha Rothe, was one of these victims as a member of the White Rose resistance group.
- One of the groups reports on this original function of the building, which today primarily offers luxury shopping experiences: Parts of the building ensemble have stood on Stadthausbrücke since the 18th century; since the early 19th century, the Hamburg police force was located there as part of an ever-expanding administrative complex. From 1933 onwards, people who did not fit in with the National Socialists' world view were arrested, interrogated and tortured there.
- These people also included Jews. In their video, a second project group presents a number of fates known by name and shows how they are remembered today at Geschichtsort Stadthaus.
- The third group also deals with this memory: they present the exhibition in the ‘new old’ building and conducted an interview with Dr Christine Eckel, a member of staff at the history site.
- The fourth group made a documentary film about the Geschichtomat project ‘at work’. They observed the other groups at work At the "Stadthaus" and showed everything that goes into making a film: a great insight into the project for anyone interested!
We would like to thank Dr Christine Eckel and the whole team at the Geschichtsort Stadthaus for their support!
As always, you can find all the videos here. We hope you enjoy watching them!
