The story of Jewish Family Names
Jewish naming has a different tradition than Christian naming. For a long time, fixed family names were rather unusual in the Jewish culture of Central and Eastern Europe. Jewish children were usually given their father's first name as a surname. For example, Samuel ben (son of) Moses. Beginning in the late 18th century, laws were enacted in many states requiring Jews to have fixed, hereditary surnames. How and why this happened, we explain to you in this video.
