The former Rabbi of Altona and Hamburg
We made a short documentary about the former Chief Rabbi of Altona and Hamburg, Joseph Carlebach (1883-1942). Carlebach first came to Hamburg as principal of the Talmud Torah School and became Chief Rabbi at Bornplatz Synagogue in 1936. Like many Hamburg Jews, he was deported to a concentration camp in 1941. There he organized secret school lessons and small festivals to give hope to his fellow prisoners.
We hope that we can give you a small overview of his life in this video.
