Johann Gurlitt and the first Jewish Students at Johanneum

David Mendel, Meyer Isler and Isaac Wolffson

Description:

In our contribution to Geschichtomat, we have dealt with the first Jewish students of Johanneum, such as David Mendel, Meyer Isler and Isaac Wolffson. We also took a closer look at the person of Johann Gurlitt, the principal of Johanneum at that time. Johann Gurlitt was instrumental in the first admission of Jews to the scholarly school in the 19th century. Gurlitt advocated for a renewal and reform of the school system so that disadvantaged Jews would also have access to good grammar school education. Some Jewish students who were taught under his guidance have become famous and made great achievements in our society.
