We will tell you who Gabriel Riesser was and about the significance of his grave site. Gabriel Riesser was born on 02.04.1806 in Hamburg and died on 22.04.1863 also in Hamburg. He was a German lawyer, notary, journalist, politician and as a senior court judge he was the first Jewish judge in Germany. Riesser's tomb is a reminder that Riesser fought for equal rights for Jews. He was buried in the Grindel cemetery in the Rotherbaum district of the city. The cemetery was destroyed during the Nazi era. Some graves, including that of Gabriel Riesser, were moved to the Jewish cemetery in Ohlsdorf. Gabriel Riesser was immortalized in several places in Hamburg, for example in the town hall, there is a relief of him. A street in Hamburg-Hamm was also named after him, Riesserstraße.
