Former Alsterdorfer Anstalten

During National Socialism, people with disabilities were persecuted and murdered. One of them was Elise Kramer from Hamburg. To learn more about her and the Nazi crimes, we went to Alsterdorf. This is where the Alsterdorfer Anstalten used to be located. From 1850 up until the 1970s, people with disabilities were housed and detained there. During the Nazi era, these people were treated with cruelty and some were taken to “Tötungsanstalten“, for example in Vienna. Today, the site of the former Alsterdorfer Anstalten is home to the Evangelische Stiftung Alsterdorf (Alsterdorf Protestant Foundation) and a memorial. There we interviewed Ingo Wille, a historian and Stolperstein researcher.
