Hamburgs Jewish School during the First World War
Today's Joseph-Carlebach-Schule was also hit hard during the First World War. The students of the school, which was still called Talmud-Tora-Schule at that time, had, like all students in the German Reich, a great war euphoria. But in everyday school life, the war was to be felt by the students. Food became scarce and due to a lack of teaching materials, teaching at the school became difficult. As the war progressed, teachers and students who had gone to war had to be mourned. In the resulting shortage of teachers, women were admitted to the teaching staff for the first time, which was unimaginable until that time. As part of our research, we also spoke with Hamburg's State Rabbi Shlomo Bistritzky.
